Rafael Benitez is set to take over at Newcastle United before their clash with Leicester on Monday night, according to reports.

With the Magpies embroiled in a relegation battle, the club are ready to turn to the Spaniard in order to maintain their Premier League status.

The club had appeared set to sack Steve McClaren on Wednesday, but the Englishman was left clinging to his job ahead of a crunch meeting with the club’s board on Thursday.

According to the Daily Mail, though, Newcastle are now poised to appoint Benitez, who would be one of the highest-profile managers at the club in years.

Benitez was understood to have wanted assurances over the club’s ambition, and would likely discuss summer budgets and control over transfers before taking the job.

A deal taking Benitez to St James’ Park is close to being agreed, though, with the former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss set to assume control before the club’s trip to Leicester.

Newcastle would need to sack McClaren before finalising the appointment, but with just ten games left to go, the club are in desperate need of change, and this managerial change looks imminent.
