Adrian Mariappa

Mariappa has played 244 games for Watford

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has confirmed that he has made “a final bid” for Watford defender Adrian Mariappa.

BBC Sport understands that Watford rejected a bid in the region of £2.25m from Wigan but the 25-year-old was not interested in speaking to the club.

And Pardew confirmed he had made his final offer for the centre-back.

Pardew said: “We have made our last bid now, it’s final. If he doesn’t come today, then he probably won’t come.”

He added: “In the summer, we will probably look elsewhere, if I am honest, so that’s that.

“It’s purely in Watford’s court. In terms of the boy, we obviously haven’t spoken to him.

“We are waiting for Watford to decide what they want to do, and they probably have to take into account what the boy wants to do as well, I should think, and we will see.”

Mariappa came through the ranks at the Championship club, making his debut in August 2005.

The defender has 18 months remaining on his contract at Vicarage Road and has previously skippered the club, who are currently 18th in the Championship.

He is in the side who face Millwall on Tuesday evening.
